REVEREND TRUMMER GLOVER

By Pamela R. Jeffers

We are now living in the age of the mega churches and while granted this is definitely the will of God, it is also His will to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of the smaller neighborhood churches and their committed pastors. The Bible tells us that, " for where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (KJV) God is in these churches and with its pastors as well. They are the pastors who are in the trenches and prayer closet’s of long ago; continuing on even in today’s populace, being used as well to usher even the mega churches to the forefront. They are the unsung heroes, sort of speak that do not receive the recognition that is so long over due and undoubtedly deserving of them. These pastors are often overlooked, underpaid and under appreciated. Such a man as this stands tall each and every Sunday in the pulpit of a small church in SpringfieldGardens, Queens New York. The man of which I am speaking of is the Reverend Trummer Glover, Pastor of Christian Unity Baptist Church.

Trummer Glover was born on September 9, 1931 in Anniston, Alabama, a small city outside of Birmingham. He was born to parents that knew the Lord and were very committed to serving Him. His mother, a missionary and his father, faithfully served their sanctified Pentecostal, hometown church. Witnessing their commitment greatly influenced young Glover, who first gave his life to the Lord at the age of 14.  Unfortunately, his enthusiasm and walk with the Lord waned when he started to fall victim to negative peer pressure, which resulted in him drinking and smoking by the time he had graduated High School. At 22, he was on his first marriage, serving in the U.S. Army and had fallen far away from the Lord. Within two years his marriage was over and he had already met his present wife Eugenia, who while dating him received her salvation and prophesized before they married, that he would one day be a preacher when he stopped partying and sinning. Because he was so far away from the Lord at that time, he was not ready to hear this proclamation. Glover wasn’t happy with the change that Eugenia had made and one night after binge drinking went to see her to set her straight about her now serving the Lord.

Glover didn’t realize it at the time but while he was bent on serving the devil, God had other plans. When he arrived at Eugenia’s home, he found that she was preparing to go to church. She began talking to him about the Lord and the more she praised God, the angrier he became. Glover soon came to realize that it was the enemy that was trying to keep him from his destiny and purpose but not before thinking of a way he could stop Eugenia from this rambling about God. He was soon given a solution. But when he raised his hand to inflict pain on her, the Lord stopped him. His hand actually stopped in mid air! He felt as if someone actually was standing behind him holding his arm back. This experience frightened him and he left. But while he was driving home that same night he had a face to face encounter with the Lord that abruptly sobered him up. This as well frightened him…so much so, that he stopped the car, got out and knelt down right in the street to ask the Lord for His forgiveness and His salvation. When he tried to sleep that same night, the Lord again showed up and wrestle with Glover.

The very next day, he met with Eugenia and asked if he could go to church with her. There had been a revival going on at the church that she was now a member of, but the night before was to be the last night. Eugenia made a phone call anyway to see if she could bring Glover to the church. The pastor told her earlier that day God spoke to him about holding the revival for a few more days. Glover discovered later that God was waiting for him to show up. And thank God, for Glover recommitted his life to serving the Lord at the revival. During the subsequent days that followed Glover returned to the revival, had hands laid on him by a visiting prophet and was delivered from all his demons.  He began faithfully serving this Church of God In Christ Church as a deacon. God then started to speak to his heart about becoming a minister. A short time after that Glover was told by a Methodist minister that he would one day have his own church. He said “yes” to the call and the Lord sent him to a Methodist church to attend seminary school. He was later led to leave the Methodist church and was ordained in 1968 in the Baptist church. Reverend Glover’s very first sermon was based on the 9th Chapter of The Gospel of John verse 33 – If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.” (KJV)  From the very beginning Reverend Glover’s ministry has been rooted and grounded in the gifts and flow of the Holy Spirit.

While Reverend Glover was establishing his ministry, his family was growing to a total of five. God was truly having his way with his family for all five of his children have received salvation from the Lord. But his family’s faith and trust in the Lord was severely tested when one of his daughters developed Sarcoidosis and six months after being diagnosed, died. This proved to be a very difficult time for Reverend Glover and his family and although they never gave up having faith that God could heal, they accepted that God is sovereign and that He had his way. Reverend Glover says that although there are no words to describe how one feels to lose a child for you look for your children to succeed you, they (his family) have peace in knowing that her spirit is with Christ and that they will all one day be reunited with her.

Despite the fact that Reverend Glover has battled his own health issues, he continues to preach the truth. Even as his eye sight is sorely compromised he can look out into his congregation and feel the spirit of his people; he knows when a sheep is missing from the flock. The aim of his ministry has always been to win souls and to see that they are delivered and set free from the clutches of satan. He is disappointed when he sees people deceived by the enemy, leave the church and forfeit the great promise that the Lord has for them in the salvation of Jesus.

Reverend Trummer Glover declares that he will keep on pastoring as long as the Lord allows. Nowadays he often shares his pulpit with his daughter, Reverend Belinda Morris. He maintains that he wants to be remembered for his honesty, integrity and the fact that he is a pastor that would tell you the truth without sugarcoating it.
